Mötesplats Rydberg - The SCALE-UP Active-Learning Pedagogy
The SCALE-UP Active-Learning Pedagogy
- Collaborative activities for a student-centered learning environment
With Gerald Feldman, Department of Physics, George Washington University, Washington, DC USA.
Abstract
The time-honored conventional lecture (“teaching by telling”) has been shown to be ineffective for science classes. Collaborative group learning environments have proven far more effective for enhancing critical thinking skills and developing problem-solving abilities. The introductory physics classes at George Washington University (GWU) have been using a collaborative group-learning pedagogical approach known as SCALE-UP for the past 15 years, and the “standard” lecture format has essentially been eliminated. Professor Feldman will give us an insight into the SCALE-UP pedagogy.
Workshop on the SCALE-UP Active-Learning Pedagogy, March 10
During his visit to the Department of Physics, Professor Feldman will also hold a workshop on the SCALE-UP pedagogy, where participants can test the methodology themselves. The workshop is organised by NRCF and is open to both high school and university physics teachers. It will take place on Monday, March 10, from 14.00 to 17.00.
Hybrid meeting
You can attend the Rydberg lecture hall at 15:15. Coffee and cake will be served from 15.00.
You can also join Mötesplats Rydberg online via the meeting tool Zoom:
